PRODUCT OVERVIEW

The AZ8000 DDS represents the zenith of 10Micron’s Alt-Azimuth engineering, manifesting as a new generation heavy-duty mount in a robotic Fork (Gimbal) configuration. This system is characterized by its massive, stiff mechanical structure designed to support large-scale optical tubes while maintaining the elegance and precision inherent to Italian manufacturing.

This 'Go-To' system integrates 10Micron’s exclusive DDS technology, utilizing industrial-grade absolute on-axis encoders and high-torque and high-efficiency direct-drive motors to deliver seamless tracking and pointing accuracy. This mount is engineered for for high-end astronomy, research and new aerospace applications.

Heritage and Vision

First developed in 2018 alongside the AZ5000, this mount is the largest ever designed by 10Micron, representing the ultimate mechanical evolution of the brand. It was conceived to tackle the most ambitious projects in the universe, bringing the same ease of use found in our portable units to a massive, industrial-scale instrument.

Applications and Targets

The AZ8000 DDS is the indispensable platform for professional research, high-end astronomy, and the aerospace industry. It is specifically optimized for critical missions such as Space Situational Awareness (SSA), Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST), and Free Space Optical communications (FSO). Its ability to track fast-moving objects makes it ideal for satellite and space debris monitoring, as well as advanced spectroscopic investigations and automated supernova searches.

Payload and Setup

Designed for the most demanding instrumentation, the AZ8000 DDS features a telescope payload capacity of up to 700 kg (1543 lb) and can accommodate optical tubes up to 40 inches (1000 mm) in diameter. To maximize its professional utility, the mount can be configured with a single or double Nasmyth focus, allowing for heavy or complex scientific instruments to remain stable while the telescope slews.

Motion and Mechanical Engineering

The mount is driven by our proprietary Direct Drive System (DDS), which utilizes high-torque, high-efficiency magnetic motors. This gearless technology eliminates mechanical wear and backlash, allowing for exceptional pointing speeds. The system is managed by a sophisticated feedback loop featuring on-axis high-resolution absolute encoders that provide real-time correction for unparalleled tracking accuracy.

The mount’s mechanical integrity is defined by its very stiff and compact fork structure, which is specifically engineered to minimize vibrations during high-speed movements. Large-diameter, high-quality ball bearings ensure fluid motion under heavy loads. The mount features a minimum base height to improve overall stability and facilitate installation in smaller domes. Safety is prioritized through integrated mechanical stops on both axes, electromechanical brakes for altitude security, and an on-board emergency stop system to protect both the operator and the instrumentation.

Advanced Control and Connectivity

The mount features integrated electronics and an onboard industrial microserver running a Linux-based operating system for reliable, standalone management. It supports a range of connectivity options, including Ethernet, RS-232, and a dedicated GPS port with PPS signal for precise time synchronization. The system is powered by a 48V supply, optimized for professional-grade performance and stability.

Operational control is facilitated through an integrated sky model capability, allowing for advanced pointing models with up to 100 stars to correct for mechanical flexures and atmospheric refraction. The proprietary firmware includes an Auto-Tuning feature that optimizes motor parameters for specific payloads, eliminating resonance for the customer's unique payload. Users can manage the mount via a rugged, professional graphic display keypad or through a modern, browser-based web interface for full remote configuration and satellite TLE management.
